Senior Living Facility Opens at Former Hospital Site

The Bristal, an assisted living facility offering 116 residences to people 65 and older, has opened at the former site of St. Agnes Hospital on North St. in White Plains.

Featuring everything from a movie theatre to a putting green, the new 116-residence senior housing facility on North St. in White Plains is offering a new approach to senior living.

The Bristal, located at the former location of St. Agnes Hospital, opened its doors two weeks ago. Vacant since St. Agnes closed its doors in 2004, the site has gone through a complete renovation and now includes three floors of residences as well as an "activity floor" that offers a full-service salon, parlor and even a bingo room. An enormous dining hall anchors the ground floor.

The building layout includes 73 studio apartments, 41 one-bedroom and two two-bedroom spaces. There is also a dedicated wing where Alzheimer's patients receive specialized care.

"What we are really trying to do is re-define senior living in Westchester County," said Susan Yubas, director of business development for The Bristal.

The Bristal is development company Engel Burman's first venture into Westchester. The company has had success with seven similar communities on Long Island and chose to move into Westchester after recognizing a need for senior housing. Yubas said most of the residents at The Bristal are expected to come from White Plains and surrounding communities.

Monthly rent for a room in The Bristal runs from $4,800 per-month for a studio to about $5,900 per-month for a one bedroom. The price includes meals, utilities and other amenities.

That price will also provide seniors with a living facility built with their needs in mind. The building is meticulously planned out, with everything from color schemes to lighting serving a purpose. There are also assistants on-site to provide care in the event of falls or other emergencies.

The idea is to allow seniors at the facility to continue to live a life of luxury, while providing for any needs they may require.

"If we can give them that help, they can have a fabulous quality of life," Yubas said.

Another important aspect of senior living is the community feel offered within the building's walls. The facility is reserved to people 65 and older, and each resident is encouraged to interact with other residents through games and activities.

The Bristal also owns a bus to transport residents to events and activities together.

"That's really the difference of moving into a community like this versus (staying) home," said Yubas. "There is always somebody home, always somebody to do something with."
