Today in White Plains: Crowne Plaza Grand Opening Celebration; Primary Elections; Devil Wears Prada Author Speaks at Manhattan College





  • The Crowne Plaza in White Plains is hosting a grand opening ceremony for the $15 million in renovations it made to its lobby, bar, guest suites, gym and meeting facilities. The work included  complete renovations of 402 guest rooms and suites to include all furniture, carpet, drapes, bathrooms and bedding; renovation of all guest corridors; installation of 42-flat screen televisions in all guest rooms and suites; and upgrades to bathroom amenities and fixtures.   • Primaries are today. Although there are no local contested primaries in the city of White Plains, Democrat Benjamin Boykin II is running on the independence line for the  District 5 seat on the Westchester County Board of Legislators in an opportunity to ballot write-in contest. District 5 encompasses Harrison, Scarsdale and White Plains. Results can be found here after polls close at 9 p.m. Check here to find your local polling place.
  • The White Plains High School varsity field hockey team plays a home game against Edgemont at 4:15 p.m., while the varsity field hockey team goes on the road to face Ossining at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity swim team heads to the College of New Rochelle to face the Ursuline school at 4:15 p.m. Check here for today's schedule.
  • New York Times bestselling author Lauren Weisberger will visit Manhattan College today at 6 p.m. to discuss her book, The Devil Wears Prada, and her career. Wiesberger's first job as the assistant to Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue, was the inspiration for The Devil Wears Prada. Her writing career has thrived with Everyone Worth KnowingLast Night at Chateau Marmont, and Chasing Harry Winston also making The New York Times bestselling list. The talk wil take place in Hayden Hall, room 100. Manhattan College is located at 4513 Manhattan College Parkway in Riverdale.   • There's still time to register for the Military Career Expo on Sept. 12 in West Point, NY.  The event, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is an opportunity to meet with top companies looking to hire vets. These companies include government contractors, national corporations and local companies. The expo is free to job seekers.
