3D Printing Technology Comes to Westchester at The Digital Arts Experience

in On Tuesday, Dec. 17, The Digital Arts Experience (The DAE) hosted a special information session and workshop to display its new 3D printing technology.

Despite the poor weather conditions, over 30 people were in attendance. Guests were given refreshments and the opportunity to learn all about the Rob Kissner, President and CEO of The DAE, created an iPhone 5S bumper using the MakerBot printer from a 3D model downloaded from Thingiverse.com, MakerBot’s online 3D printing community. He then presented a brief history of the 3D printing, its current applications and how this technology is revolutionizing in medicine, space travel, prosthetics, and more.

existed only in science fiction novels and movies,” Rob said. “3D printing allows for more affordable and effective medical treatments, accessibility to cost effective prosthetics, and thefreedom to allow anyone to, more or less, create any object that he or she could need or want.”

The MakerBot Replicator 2 3D printer was recently acquired by The DAE to supplement their existing courses, create new 3D printing­ based curriculum and provide a unique service to

Westchester. In order to print an object, Rob explained, you can download a digital file of the

object you want to create from Thingiverse, or model it from scratch using a number of free modeling programs. He then showed guests how to adjust the object for optimal printing in MakerWare and properly load the PLA plastic filament as well as level the machine’s build plate.
