Hospice Volunteer Inducted Into Westchester County Senior Hall of Fame

Dickie Kay, a longtime Westchester resident and volunteer for Hospice & Palliative Care of Westchester (HPCW) was recently inducted into the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs & Services Senior Hall of Fame.

She was recognized for her numerous volunteer efforts which she began more than 60 years ago.

Dickie began volunteering with HPCW in 2010. She dedicates one or two days each week to visiting with hospice patients at Port Chester Nursing Home. Her volunteer activities include talking with patients, reading to them, or simply sitting and providing comfort with a gentle touch.

Mrs. Kay’s dedication to HPCW provides patients and their families with a sense of comfort during a difficult time.

Mrs. Kay’s interest in working with hospice patients began in 1994, when she and her late husband Martin began volunteering with patients diagnosed with a terminal illness at United Hospital prior to its closing.  The Kays’ soon relocated their volunteer services to White Plains Hospital. In addition to Mrs. Kay’s work with HPCW, she has also volunteered her time with various organizations including the American Red Cross.

According to Mary Jane Schaumann, Director of Volunteer & CCP Services for HPCW, Kay is an outstanding member of the Westchester community. “Throughout the course of her volunteer efforts at HPCW, Dickie has continuously made a difference in the lives of our patients and their families.” Schaumann said. “Mrs. Kay acknowledges and respects the care that the facility staff provides to all Port Chester Nursing Home residents.”

The Westchester County Senior Hall of Fame was established in 1982 by the county’s Department of Senior Programs and Services.
