Astorino Adds Funding to Aid ‘Trap, Neuter and Release’ Program

Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino and Kiley Blackman, Founder of Animal Defenders of Westchester, today announced that the county will provide $5,000 in additional funding through the Animal League of Westchester, for a program known as “Trap, Neuter and Release.”  The program helps to curtail the number of feral or stray cats.

“I want to thank Animal Defenders of Westchester who came to my office late last year and brought attention to the problem of feral cats and the health hazard they can cause.  This $5,000 investment helps to aid ongoing efforts to tackle this health and safety issue in a compassionate manner,” said Astorino.

The major hurdle for the successful Trap, Neuter and release program is the cost of the procedure itself.  Many Westchester volunteers already seek and secure feral cats.  They then bring the cats to veterinarians to be neutered.  The cost of this procedure can be as high as $400.  Some veterinarians do preform the service at a reduced rate, however, with the limited funds that all volunteer groups have, Animal Defenders of Westchester say that the county’s investment is a big help.

“Two uncontrolled breeding cats, with a 10 year life span, plus all their kittens, can produce thousands of cats. They are easy prey for larger animals, cars and cruel 'pranksters' who enjoy harming innocent beings. Neutered cats are also healthier as a result of medical care and vaccinations, making them better citizens in the community. That is why we are so appreciative to Rob Astorino for hearing our pleas and helping us in this important effort,” said Blackman.
