International Film Festival on Women at Manhattanville College, March 17-April 10

The second annual International Film Festival will be held at Manhattanville College from Monday, March 17- Thursday, April 10, 2014. All screenings will take place in the Berman Students’ Center Theater at 7 p.m.

The theme of this year’s festival is “Women in a Global Context: Then and Now.”  The films hail from all over the world and grapple with a wide range of issues that affect the lives of women globally including, education, war, military dictatorships, motherhood, health, domestic violence, and patriarchy.

Monday, March 17, 2014 – English-Vinglish. Dir. Gauri Shinde (2012) (India)

All of Tehran is preparing to celebrate the traditional New Year with the festival of fire (“Fireworks Wednesday”). On this auspicious evening, a young woman named Rouhi is employed by a young couple to clean their house. Sweet and naive, Rouhi is engaged to be married, but her innocence is shattered when she finds her employers' household in crisis over accusations of infidelity.

A pregnant peasant woman seeks redress from the Chinese bureaucracy after the village chief kicks her husband in the groin in this comedy of justice. As she is frustrated by each level of the hierarchy and travels farther and farther away from the countryside the viewer is also provided with a look at a changing Chinese society.
