Opportunity For Teachers To Learn Holocaust History Firsthand This Summer

HOLOCAUST CENTER (HHREC) SPONSORS GERMANY AND POLAND TEACHER TOUR

A select, limited group of local teachers will get a new dimension in teaching the Holocaust and human rights curriculum this summer when they tour Germany and Poland, meeting with top government officials, historians and human rights leaders.  The 15-day professional development expedition (July 2 – July 17) is organized by the Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center (HHREC), not-for-profit organization, serving Westchester, Fairfield and Putnam counties.

The itinerary includes stays in Berlin, Weimar, Leipzig, Nuremberg, Dresden and Krakow, where the teachers and HHREC leaders will tour such Holocaust sites as Oskar Schindler’s Factory, the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camps and the Wannsee House.  Historic sites covered on the educator tour include Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Wall Memorial, the Nuremberg Courthouse and Jewish Quarter of Krakow. The deadline to apply is Jan. 31st, and it is the fourth time in its history that the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center has organized an overseas professional development summer event. Teachers who are selected are required to attend one pre-trip seminar in the spring of 2014 and two post-trip sessions in fall 2014.  They will develop lessons derived from their experiences and make a presentation at their school or at a local professional conference.

The tour cost, including airfare, ground transportation, meals and guided tours, is just $2,000, thanks to a substantial subsidy from HHREC.
