[Friday 11 a.m.]

White Plains public schools are closed Friday as heavy snow and gelid temperatures wallop the region.

The city is expected to receive between three and seven inches of snow Friday afternoon, with an additional six to 10 inches blanketing the area in the evening hours, according to the National Weather Service. The temperature will dip to about 21-degrees Friday night, and could be accompanied by winds around 40 miles-per-hour.

As of 11 a.m. Friday, the squall had already deposited a thin veneer of precipitation on White Plains roads and sidewalks. The DPW was salting walkways Friday morning.

State police are urging drivers to take heed.

"Historically, snow storms of this predicted magnitude have resulted in road closures and motorists becoming stranded on the highways," state police said in a release. "It is anticipated that travel conditions will deteriorate rapidly beginning in the late morning and continuing into the evening hours. Sporadic closures of sections of I-84, the Taconic State Parkway and I-684 throughout the day are anticipated."

"All vehicular traffic, particularly commercial motor vehicles, are advised to avoid these roadways," authorities added. "All vehicles abandoned on the roadway will be subject to immediate impoundment."
