White Plains Man Promoted to Commander of Civil Air Patrol
Major Joseph E. Wooley, of White Plains, assumed command of Civil Air Patrol's South Eastern Group Thursday during a ceremony at the Westchester County Airport.

In a symbolic ceremony in which the guidon gets passed from old commander to new, White Plains resident Major Joseph E. Wooley assumed command of the Civil Air Patrol’s South Eastern Group Thursday at the Westchester County Airport in West Harrison.
The group, which is headquartered at Westchester County Airport, consists of eight squadrons in the Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess County areas. Wooley, an attorney at law and hearing officer, has been a member of the all-volunteer Air Force auxiliary since 2006. During that time, he has earned numerous certificates and awards for his performance in CAP’s three areas of emergency services, cadet programs and aerospace education.
In 2008, Wooley served as Emergency Services Officer for the Westchester Composite Squadron and was responsible for extensive search and rescue training of senior and cadet members, both in the air and on the ground. He was later appointed the squadron’s Deputy Commander. In 2010, he assumed the position of Homeland Security Officer for North Eastern Region.

Wooley, a former New York Guard member and Colonel in the United States Air Force, has firm goals set for his new group. “Initially I’d like to see more cadets involved in our Emergency Services program and recruit more pilots for our search and rescue missions and our work with FEMA.”
The Major replaces SEG Commander Major Edward Angelovich of Wappingers Falls, New York. “ He has tremendous experience both in military and civilian life, and a wonderful ability to form relationships,” says Angelovich. “It will serve him well as commander.”

Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit organization with 61,000 members nationwide, operating a fleet of 550 aircraft. CAP, in its Air Force auxiliary role, performs 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 80 lives annually. Its volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. The members play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to more than 26,000 young people currently participating in the CAP cadet programs.
