Grace in Motion: Dance Photography Exhibition Salutes the Art of Performance

Dance is artistry blended with athleticism, an ephemeral art form made lasting by the camera’s lens. Grace in Motion: Photographing Dance, on view at ArtsWestchester from January 10-25, features studio and live performance photographs that pay homage to the dynamism and grace of the human body in motion. Join the photographers for an opening reception on January 9 from 6-8:30pm.

Westchester is home to several prominent dance companies and award-winning choreographers. Grace in Motion brings together two vibrant artistic communities – dance and the visual arts – through the compelling images of renowned local photographers Tracy Allan, Stephanie Berger, Ira Block, Ellen Crane and Mark Sadan.

Dance is an expressive art form that unites cultures. The selected images will highlight performances from around the world as well as dances from regional companies. As a photographer on assignment for National Geographic, Ira Block has witnessed traditional performances from around the globe, including those by Japanese and Native American dancers. Tracy Allan’s studio photographs, alongside his slow-motion videos of Alvin Ailey troop members, document the physicality and athleticism of contemporary dancers. Stephanie Berger, Ellen Crane and Mark Sadan immortalize the beauty of ballet with sensitivity to the emotive quality and sculptural lines in dancers’ performances. To supplement this celebration of movement, ArtsWestchester will screen Mark Sadan’s recent documentary of the Isadora Duncan Dance Company. Additionally, on Saturday, January 18, ArtsWestchester invites residents to bring their own dance photographs, drawings, or writings to add to our Grace in Motion community gallery.
