Roach: Bristal at White Plains is 'Remarkable'

Assisted living center at former St. Agnes Hospital site holds ribbon cutting Thursday.

For White Plains mayor Thomas Roach, preserving the now-defunct St. Agnes Hospital was more than city history—it was personal history.

"I was born there, my parents were born there, and my grandfather was born there," he said Thursday afternoon, at the ribbon cutting for The Bristal at White Plains assisted living center that now sits on the former hospital campus.

"This project preserved one of our historic buildings—St. Agnes is preserved," Roach added. "I think they did a beautiful job."

The center has been accepting tenants since late 2012, and is currently at 40-percent capacity, but waited until the warmer months for its soft opening, officials said.

The Bristal features 148 residences, and includes a health care program with doctor visits and an on-duty nurse. The sprawling brick facilities also includes a movie theater, fitness center and library.

The Westchester County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) lent financial aid to The Bristal by authorizing the sale of $38,590,000 in tax-exempt bonds
