Food Bank for Westchester Announces Honorees for Ninth Annual Hunger Heroes Breakfast

The Food Bank for Westchester today announced the honorees for the Ninth Annual Hunger Heroes Breakfast to be held on Thursday, June 5 at the Tappan Hill Mansion in Tarrytown.  This year’s honorees include Baldwin Mitchell of the Yonkers Seventh Day Adventist Church Food Pantry, The Boys and Girls Club of Northern Westchester in Mt. Kisco, Maria Regina High School in Hartsdale, Shiloh Baptist Church in New Rochelle and Stop & Shop. The prestigious honor recognizes those who have made exceptional strides against hunger in Westchester County.

“We are thrilled to honor these individuals and organizations. They are not only exemplary citizens and humanitarians, they also show how vital it is to support the charge to end hunger and improve lives across the county,” said Ellen Lynch, Executive Director. “Our Hunger Heroes Breakfast is the perfect opportunity to show our appreciation for the continued dedication and generosity of our volunteers and supporters.”

Baldwin Mitchell will receive the Volunteer Award for his tremendous commitment over the last 13 years to the Yonkers Seventh Day Adventist Church Food Pantry. Mitchell can usually be found leading the truck delivery, cleaning the pantry, unpacking boxes or lending a hand wherever needed. His time and effort has left a meaningful impact on the community.

The Boys and Girls Club of Northern Westchester in Mt. Kisco will be awarded the Service Provider Award for its dedication in combatting the critical issue of food insecurity. Current projects and programming include the Backpack Buddies Program, the Food Bank’s Kraft Foods Mobile Pantry truck and Kids Cafe. Through all of these programs, The Boys and Girls Club is educating hundreds of area families about healthy eating and living.

Maria Regina High School in Hartsdale will be honored with the Donor Award for its more than 25 years of service to help hundreds of families in Yonkers bring home a complete Thanksgiving dinner. The school has continued to outdo itself year after year by addressing the issue of hunger and collecting lunch money and boxes of food to support the annual turkey drive. Last year, the school brought in more than 300 turkeys. 

Shiloh Baptist Church in New Rochelle will receive the Michael Winter Service Memorial Award for Agency Excellence. Since becoming a member agency with the Food Bank in 2009, Shiloh Baptist Church Food Pantry has led the call to end hunger in Westchester County by offering multiple feeding programs such as Shiloh Baptist Church Food Pantry, Shiloh Baptist Church Breakfast Program, Shiloh Baptist Church BackPack Program and the Shiloh Baptist Church Kids Café. In addition to these onsite programs, the church hosts the Kraft Mobile Food Pantry to help fill in the gaps between regular pantry days.

Stop & Shop will receive the Corporate Service Award for the company’s commitment to fighting hunger at every level of its business including the corporate, foundation and store level. Their efforts include the One Meal Campaign in collaboration with The Journal News; Food for Friends at the store level and donations of food as part of their year round commitment highlighted by 800 turkeys during the holidays (Turkey Express) and a donation of 504 hams just this past Passover/Easter season.  Stop & Shop has been a major supporter of the Food Bank’s BackPack program, a partner on the launch of the Kraft Mobile Food Pantry and continues to provide valuable employee volunteer support year round. 

The Golden Scoop Award goes to the corporate team that repacks the most pounds of food in the Golden Scoop Corporate Competition, an annual event held in the Food Bank warehouse in Elmsford. This year, the competition will be held Friday, May 16. The current holders of the Golden Scoop Trophy, who have won the trophy for three straight years, is Team Stop & Shop.
