Compare Your Home Heating Oil Price

A state energy agency releases updated average oil prices, including for the lower Hudson Valley.

The brief cold snap of earlier in the week might be easing, but there's still plenty of chill in the air to keep your oil burner hard at work.

Curious if you are paying the same as those around you?

NYSERDA, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, just released this round up of average home heating oil prices throughout the lower Hudson Valley, updated Jan. 5.

Our region came in just above the state average for December at 398.5 cents per gallon, on average, for standard #2 home heating oil or $3.985 per gallon.

The state average is 393.4 cents per gallon.

The prices tracked are for #2 Fuel Oil, on credit, and surveys are done weekly from October through March and less frequently during other times of the year.

Curious about wider trends?

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the price for residential heating oil increased just a hair last week (the week ending Jan. 2.) "The average residential heating oil price rose by $0.01 per gallon last week to reach $3.84 per gallon, nearly $0.51 per gallon higher than the same time last year."

My last delivery in December was $3.49. I am sure it has changed since then. My grand total for 2011 was just under $4000 just in oil
Lisa Buchman (Editor) January 6, 2012 at 03:22 pm
We are now at $3.54 a gallon...which took a lot of haggling with a local oil company. Curious if others accept the rates they're quoted at face value, or call around to get deals?
Jimmy January 6, 2012 at 03:51 pm
Natural gas is below $3.00 a thousand cubic feet. It is 1/3 the price of heating oil when you compare it to BTU's. It is equivalent to a liitle more than a $1 a gallon of home heating oil.
Support safe responsible drilling in NY and convert to clean burning natural gas.

I currently own a multi family home in Ossining that had an oil fired burner. On Nov 9th I converted to a gas fire burner. The switch cost me $1900.00. I received my first month Con Ed bill $175.00 compared to last years monthly oil bill of $1800.00. I nearly fainted when I saw the savings. And for the last 15 years that I've owned the investment property if I only converted back then I could have put one child through College. Make no mistake about it! Gas is cheaper!

Thats interesting, I read all around how gas is cheaper yet the bills my neighbors are getting dwarf my oil bill. What are they doing wrong I wonder?
Billy January 6, 2012 at 10:28 pm
They're not doing anything wrong, but have ConEd & their union employees to thank for high gas prices. If I'm not mistaken, the cost of delivery is more that the commodity itself. Also NY, unlike neighboring CT or NJ, also charges sales tax on its utility bills. That adds another 6-7% to your bill.

Our average ConEdison bill for December, January and February is usually around $1200 to $1400 per month!! We had a free ride the last two months with the unusual mild temperatures ---- so far. So my bill for December was a cool $700!! WOW!! Something to celebrate...last year this time I paid $1,200 and that is keeping Zone 1 at 66, zone 2 at 68 and zone 3 (which is downstairs and never used) off.

I would suggest taking advantage of a free energy audit. Here's the application link...
http://www.nyserda.ny.gov/goto/~/media/Files/EERP/Residential/Programs/Existing%20Home%20Renovations/Energy%20Audits/gjgny-energy-audit-app.ashx I did this last spring and was giving a comprehensive list of upgrades to make my house more efficient. I have done a number of the weatherizing projects myself and my house is noticeably warmer and the furnace kicks on less.

These data aren't very useful for the majority of White Plains residents who live in apartments and therefore use #4 or #6 oil for heat. How about some comparative information for them?
Katie Ryan O'Connor (Editor) January 7, 2012 at 03:01 pm
Great tip Dan -- was there one fix or project that you felt was particularly DIY friendly and not hugely expensive?
Katie Ryan O'Connor (Editor) January 7, 2012 at 03:01 pm
Hi Clifford --
Excellent point. I will see what I can get on that as well!

Check www.smartclickenergy.com and see if their prices are any better

I heat with coal so I don't use much oil. Only for hot water.
Lee January 15, 2012 at 01:41 am
Some of us do not have a choice. I parts of Katonah, there is no gas. Our only alternatives to oil are propane or electric, both more costly than oil and not much better on the environment.

I found a website called www.midatlanticoil.com where you can view and compare heating oil prices in NY state.

It's not true that parking is required. You could do as I do and walk there (assuming it isRead More actually the White Plains office you are referring to and not Harrison), or take a bus, or a taxi, or have someone drop you off and pick you up. And if you aren't happy with their service, go somewhere else. There are lots of doctors not affiliated with Westmed.
Cathy G June 15, 2013 at 04:41 pm
Clifford, thanks for your two cents! How lucky for you that you can walk to your doctor's office andRead More not have to pay to park!
Raymond Lautersack June 19, 2013 at 05:55 pm
There are two expenses that I always seem to have a difficult time accepting - parking fees andRead More tolls. I too was disappoint as I am sure many were to see that the WestMed Medical Group initiated a parking charge of $2.00 for each visit regardless of the time actually spent at the White Plains facility. Upon hearing this new policy I had to step back and look at what is going on around us and looking at the bigger picture. Parking fees are a way of life for all of us who live in and around White Plains. Tolls are a way of life for any who travel in New York State and New Jersey. A charge of $2.00 per visit is less than a cup of coffee and for the medical care received, you cannot put a price on it. A $2.00 parking fee does not make nor does it detract from the 'fine organization" that WestMed Medical Group has been and remains. My visits to WestMed Medical Group unfortunately have been far more over the past several years than I care to admit however I have the complete satisfaction and comfort knowing that I am getting the best care that I can get anywhere, near and far. I am always treated professionally, with respect and never leave feeling rushed, uninformed or uncomfortable with anyone that I have come in contact with which includes the building receptionist, the clerical staff at check in and all those beyond the waiting room areas. We must be our own health advocate and if anyone feels rushed, I would suggest that they slow the pace down with the doctor and perhaps make use of the WestMed web site and send a secure message to the doctor a few days prior to your appointment with your specific concerns and issues that you'd like to discuss. When everyone is prepared, things will go much easier and timing will not be an issue. I have even had the opportunity to use the WestMed Medical Group Ambulatory Center at Theall Road in Rye. I've used both White Plains Hospital and Greenwich Hospitals in the past and they are both excellent however I found equal if not better attention and care at the Theall Road Ambulatory Center. As for where the Customer Service Center is, it should not make any difference with the service provided. If running a Center is North Carolina is more efficient and cost effective, than so be it. It is not like moving jobs outside the country as so many corporations have done and continue to do. Everyone you speak to in the Center speaks well, has the doctors calendar and the ability to make an appointment for any open time frame. What more would anyone expect of a Service Center whose mission it is to make timely appointments for patients to see the doctor of their choice.
