We have to focus on what unites us, said Astorino in front of a cheering crowd at the Crowne Plaza in White Plains. "Tomorrow we go back to work."

Astorino said he came into office four years ago because Westchester County was becoming unaffordable for the average family.

"I'm working hard to change that," he said. "We have more work to do and we need to find a healthy balance in government today to find a balance between what we want and what taxpayers can afford."

Update 10:32 p.m.: Noam Bramson concedes.

"I end this campaign more committed to public service than I have ever been," he said. "The cause for which everyone of us worked will be just as important tomorrow as it is today."

How much of a difference did Westchester County Executive Robert Astorino and New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson’s votes make today?

Still too early to tell. But both candidates remained upbeat about their bids for the County Executive’s seat as they voted earlier this morning.

Astorino, a Republican, is running for his second term as County Executive, against Bramson, a Democrat who has served as New Rochelle’s mayor since 2006.

“There’s not a whole lot you can do,” said Astorino, who voted with his family at the Hawthorne Elementary School. “People have already voted or are going to vote. Most people know who they’re going to vote for at this point. I might go around to some diners at lunch time, say ‘hi’ to people, make some calls and then, just have a little dinner with my family, go the to the hotel tonight and watch the returns.”

Astorino said he is confident his message was communicated to voters.

“We knew what we wanted to say,” Astorino said. “We are proud of our record of lowering property taxes, protecting people who need help and helping the economy.”

After he voted Tuesday morning at Barnard Elementary School in New Rochelle, Bramson said the outcome of the election will affect hundreds of thousands of lives in Westchester County.

He said when people understand the nature of the choice they will be making at the polls it was clear who was the better candidate.

Bramson said he will be out and about Tuesday, still making the campaign rounds.

"We will also be making sure we express thanks on behalf of the campaign for all the hard work people have put in," he said.
