Grand Opening of The Edge at the White Plains Public Library

A Ribbon Cutting ceremony will take place at 2:00 p.m. on December 14, 2013 to mark the Grand Opening of The Edge, a groundbreaking, high-tech library just for teens.  Mayor Thomas M. Roach will kick-off the celebrations followed by Young Adult novelist Alex London.  Guests will receive a complimentary copy of London’s latest book, Proxy, a futuristic thriller for teens. Refreshments will be served.

The Edge is the most innovative library just for teens in New York State, and one of the first libraries created specifically for today’s digital youth. The Edge is the first of a three-phase project to update the Library based on a multi-year Master Plan funded by the City of White Plains , the White Plains Library Foundation, and the State of New York. The Edge spans 3,000 square feet and was designed by Architects Bermello, Ajamil & Partners, Inc., and J R Keller LLC. The project was completed on time and within it’s budget of $1.6 million.

The Edge is divided into three areas: The Living Room—a space for socializing and gaming; The Mixing Area—a place for research and homework; and The Digital Media Lab—a flexible space for workshops, classes, and collaboration.  The goal for The Edge is to replicate the success the Library has had with The Trove children’s library. Serving childr through 6th grade and their families, the Trove is a highly popular destination—this year it welcomed 40,000 visitors, circulated 200,000 items and held nearly 700 programs attended by over 16,000 people

Library Director Brian Kenny stated; “The Edge is an important resource for young adults as they move from childhood to adulthood, providing them with the skills they need to succeed in a rapidly changing world. Prior to the creation of The Edge, the Library was not able to engage teens as well as it could. In The Edge we are providing teens with the ability to be both creators and consumers of digital media.”
