Eclectic Night at the Capitol with Thievery Corporation

A good crowd showed up December 20th at Westchester’s own Capitol Theatre … my favorite hometown venue for good sound quality and a fun crowd.

We all enjoyed Thievery Corporation, an incredibly diverse conglomeration of talent.

Thievery Corporation started about twenty years ago as two deejays, and I’ve seen them at least nine times before.

Today, they two original members play keyboards and electronics and are backed by a full band including a drummer, percussionist, bass player, guitarist, and guys on trumpet and saxophone.  But wait – there’s a lot more.

Here’s how it went.  The set started out with a few instrumentals.  Then a female singer came on stage and sang a few songs … then another…then a new male singer came on and did a few … and then the two original gals came back on and sang a few.  You get the picture – you didn’t know what to expect.  They must have 8 or 9 singers in their entourage and they shift around.  And when you think you have it, the percussionist leaves his kit and he sings a few songs.

All these different voices, with different intonations, quality and timbre make this band very unique. Click here for their YouTube video, "Until the Morning".

It was all original music, with a wide mix of everything from down tempo, to reggae, to hip-hop, with some world music flavor to it.   For example, at one point the guitarist switched gears and picked up a sitar, showing off their mix of Middle Eastern, Latin and eastern influences.  Amazing!
