Raina Kadavil, a senior at White Plains High School, is being honored at 3:30 p.m. Friday for placing second in Optimum Power to Learn’s 6th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month essay contest.

The subject of Kadavil's essay is civil rights activist Dolores Huerta.

Kadavil will be recognized by White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach during the ceremony, scheduled to take place in the White Plains School District Administration Building at 5 Homeside Ln. Kadavil will also receive a free laptop.

Earlier this year, Kadavil was recognized for her community and volunteer work by the Association of Development Officers.

Good for her!!!! Congratulations!!! BUT: anyone in our schools sponsoring an American Heritage writing contest? Celebrate the Constitution and the Founders and Framers? Do the students even know their names? I think not. pity. I'm second generation here - it's taken me almost 60 years to read and learn what I was not "given" in school. I LOVE American Exceptionalism and values!!! On the house!: Constitution for all! #ArticleV!
