Deadline Approaches to Sign up for November Writing Classes at Sarah Lawrence College

Some of the November, 2013 writing classes are not yet closed at Sarah Lawrence College, Dr. David Donnelly said yesterday. Donnelly is the Director of Continuing Education and Special Programs at the college. 

The spring, 2014 schedule will be available soon, he said. 

He also mentioned that Writing Institute instructor Dan Zevin has just won the 2013 Thurber Prize for American Humor for his book "Dan Gets a Mini-Van (Life at the Intersection of Dude and Dad.)"

November classes still open when this article was posted include two about creative writing for schoolchildren and some adult writing programs. 

The classes for children are:

  1. Creative writing for 5th and 6th graders. A fiction writing workshop. Wednesdays at 3 p.m. November 6 to December 4. Final enrollment deadline: November 9. Instructor: Sophia G. Starmack. $325. For more information about this course, click here.
  2. Creative writing for 7th and 8th graders. A fiction writing workshop. Wednesdays at 6 p.m. November 6 to December 4. Final enrollment deadline: November 9. Instructor: Sophia G. Starmack. $325. For more information about this course, click here.
The adult programs at the Writing Institute still accepting registration are: 
  1. "Query Letter Writing Workshop." November 2. Three hours beginning at 9:30 a.m. Provides advice on how to describe your book. Covers key components of effective pitch letters and queries. Includes tips about what agents and editors are looking for. Instructors: editor Caitlin Alexander and literary agent Cynthia Manson. $125. 
  2. "What's Your (Life) Story? Memoir in a Nutshell." November 3-10. Two three-hour sessions beginning at 1 p.m each Sunday. Attendees write their life stories in two pages between the first and second sessions. Instructor: Sarah Saffian. $125.
  3. "This Weekend You Write Your Story." November 9, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. How to use one's histories, memories, and senses as launching pads to transform the ordinariness of life into extraordinary stories. Instructors: Patricia Dunn and Jimin Han. $125. 
  4. "Kickstarter-Crowdfunding Campaign Development and Branding for Maximum Results." November 16. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. How to raise funds with maximum results. Instructor: Suzanne Grossberg. $100.

The Writing Institute provides fiction and nonfiction writing classes and workshops; areas of instruction include poetry, children's literature and memoir writing. Classes are small (14 or fewer students).
