New Research Center In Eastchester

LANZAR GROUP ESTABLISHES NEW RESEARCH CENTER TO ENSURE MEDICINES ARE SAFE AND EFFECTIVE FOR ALL REGARDLESS OF RACE, ETHNICITY AND GENDER

Eastchester, NY (April 12, 2014) - Clinical studies are used to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of medications and health outcomes by monitoring the effects on patients who volunteer to participate. This process should accurately reflect the patient demographics that will eventually take the medicines.  The statistics are startling, the disparity between clinical study participants and the demographics of the patients who take these medications are not in alignment.  According to the FDA, African Americans represent 13 percent of the U.S. population but only 5 percent of clinical study participants. Latinos make up 16 percent of the U.S. population but only 1 percent of clinical study participants.  Mexican Americans and Puerto Ricans have more than double the prevalence of diabetes compared to Caucasians but represented only 4 percent of clinical study participants from 1998-2001.  African American men are twice as likely to die from prostate cancer when compared to Caucasians but represent only 4 percent of prostate cancer clinical trial participants. Researchers must respond to the changing demographics of the country and better understand the impact of underrepresentation in the medicine approval process, says Carmen Polanco, MBA founder of the center.

Ethnic and racial minorities in the USA are disproportionately afflicted with HIV, Cancer, Cardiovascular Diseases and Diabetes which are currently leading causes of death. The Center for Disease Control reports, that death due to heart disease is more than 40% higher in African-Americans than Whites. Latinos are more likely to die from diabetes when compared to the rest of the population.  Researchers have reported that some medicines impact people differently; for example blood pressure medications are less effective in African Americans than other races. Inclusion of participants from diverse backgrounds advances research; it also helps find better ways to fight diseases that disproportionately impact these populations.
