Obituary: Fr. Stephen Schenck of Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Port Chester dies at age 59

Calling hours at church on Monday and Tuesday, funeral set for Wednesday.

Fr. Stephen C. Schenck, pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary Church of Port Chester, died suddenly on Saturday. He was 59.

Fr. Schenck was pastor since Aug. 1, 2009. He was ordained a Salesian priest on May 23, 1981.

Port Chester Village Board of Trustees member Luis Marino said Fr. Schenck was well-liked and respected, and his death has stunned the community.

Calling hours for Fr. Schenck have been set for Monday and Tuesday at the church, 22 Don Bosco Place, Port Chester, from noon to 9 p.m. A funeral is set for 10 a.m. at the church at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

Interment to follow Salesian Cemetery, Goshen.

Fr. Schenck was born on Nov. 25, 1952, in Brooklyn, to Charles and Eileen Bolster Schenck. He entered the Salesian Society in 1971. He ministered throughout the eastern United States, especially in New York, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C.

He survived by his siblings, Eileen and her husband John Gavigan, Patricia, William, Mark and his wife Stacy. He was uncle to Timothy, Nicholas, Thomas, Michael, William, Clorinda, Stephanie, Joann, and Great Uncle to Chet, Evan, and Manuel.

Memorial contributions in the name of Father Schenck, S.D.B., may be made to: Holy Rosary Church, 22 Don Bosco Place, Port Chester, NY 10573.

Arrangements are being handled by Craft Memorial Home, 40 Leicester St., Port Chester, 914-939-0131.

Because of the calling hours and funeral, events at the Don Bosco Community Center: 

Monday, November 12: Closed for Veterans Day & Fr. Steve Schenck memorial services.

- No MJS Teen Youth Group

Tuesday, Nov. 13: Boys & Girls Club Closed for memorial services.
- No evening programs

Wednesday, November 14: CLOSED for all activities. 10am Funeral Mass followed by afternoon luncheon at DBCC gymnasium/cafeteria.
- No evening programs

Thursday, Nov. 15: The center re-opens for regular activities.
- 8:30 am Offices open
- 3 pm Boys & Girls Club opens
