Violinist Annette Martino

Annette Martino (Massa), 85, of White Plains, NY, passed away peacefully at her home. Married for 60 years; She was the wife of Joseph (Joe) Martino. Annette was born in Brooklyn NY on June 12, 1928, a daughter of the late Jeanette and Emil Massa. 

One of five sisters, Annette was raised in Brooklyn NY and graduated from Bishop McDonalds School in Brooklyn. At that time she was taught the violin, went on to become an accomplished violinist and played with the City Center Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. Her favorite piece was Offenbach’s Barcarolle from “The Tales of Hoffman.” Annette attended college at St. Josephs School for Women for two years, at which time she moved to Teaneck NJ. As a young girl, Annette spent Saturdays playing ball at Prospect Park, and attended Radio City Music Hall every year followed by dinner at Howard Johnsons with her four sisters.

On January 10, 1953 Annette and Joe married in Teaneck, NJ and made their home in Queens, NY. In 1970 they moved to White Plains, NY where they continued to raise their seven sons for more than 40 years. Annette and Joe also made a home in Fort Lauderdale FL, spending winters there for the past 35 years.

Annette was an employee as a bank teller while in high school and worked at the New York Telephone Company for two years. Throughout her life Annette has been a member of many volunteer and philanthropic organizations in White Plains and Fort Lauderdale. She was a member of the Womans Club of White Plains, Our Lady of Sorrows (OLS) Women’s Guild and OLS Seniors, and was an usher at the community theater during winters spent in Fort Lauderdale. Through the Volunteer Corps., hundreds of patients at St. Agnes Hospital and White Plains Hospital benefitted from Annette’s generous gift of time every week for many years. Annette participated in bridge, mahjong and tennis groups. She belonged to the Italian Club and had strong civic and social ties to Westchester. Annette also enjoyed reading, shopping, cooking, traveling and Broadway theatre, but above all else she was most passionate about spending time with her family. 

A large part of Annette’s life was spent attending birthday celebrations, religious milestones, sports games and recitals for her grandchildren throughout the years. A caring and compassionate person, Annette will be missed by all who knew her. 

In addition to her parents, Annette is predeceased by her sisters, Marie Iannucci, Joan Hilferty, and Carolyn Zeitvogel.

In addition to her husband, survivors include one sister, Veronica Camilucci, seven loving sons: Jay and his wife, Lorraine, of New Fairfield CT, Michael and his wife Sara of Croton-on-the-Hudson NY, Christopher and his wife Kim of Haymarket VA, Stephen of North Salem, Mark and his wife Diane of White Plains NY, Peter and his wife Donna of Hoffman Estates IL, and Paul and his wife Maria of Charlotte NC., her beloved grandchildren: Joseph Martino and his wife Kim, Marisa and her husband Keith Marotta, Nicholas Martino and his wife Lindsay, Meagan Martino, Lauren Martino, Gregg Martino, Beau Martino, Brooks Martino, Emily Martino, Haleigh Martino, Peter Martino, Mark Robert Martino, Julia Martino, Ryan Martino, Tara Martino, Stephen Martino, Nicholas Martino, Tyler Martino, Morgan Martino and great grandchildren: Landon Martino, Lauren Martino, Carter Martino, Luke Marotta and Isabel Marotta.

A ceremony will take place on Thursday August 8th, 2013 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 920 Mamaroneck Ave. White Plains, NY 10605. A family reception will follow.
