SWBOCES Fashion Students Design for Show Using Everything from Soup to Nuts

Wear food? Who would do that?

Over the years, many performers have done it, from 1940s actress Carmen Miranda, who became wildly popular for singing and dancing while wearing an elaborate fruit hat, to Lady Gaga, who more recently wore a meat dress to make a statement.

Now, the Food for Fashion Show on Thursday, April 24, is using the concept to raise awareness of hunger and the food shortages right here in our county. Among the designers are our Fashion and Merchandising students from the SWBOCES Center for Career Services.

The show, themed "Fashion Plate: From Soup to Nuts," will be held at the Food Bank of Westchester at 200 Clearbrook Road in Elmsford. It is a competition where high school and college students have been asked to design evening outfits utilizing food and food packaging. At least 50 percent of the outfit must use food. Clearly, this is no ordinary fashion show!

Monitored by SWBOCES instructor Carmen Galiano, our students have been working diligently on their designs for months, from planning and designing to executing.

“This was a very challenging assignment because food can be difficult to manipulate as you can imagine, and unless it is very processed, does not last,” said Ms. Galiano. “But the students came up with great ideas, and we are proud to be part of this original event that is for such a good cause.”

Sketches of their proposed designs and a list of desired materials had to be submitted by Feb. 14; food products are being supplied by the sponsors. Some materials they are using include coffee, candy and pasta.

The creations will be judged by a panel of fashion experts including fashion designer Rolando Santana, Denzer owner Mary Jane Denzer, and Dean of the School of the Arts at Purchase College Ravi S. Rajan.

Models, chosen by each designer, will walk the runway wearing the outfits the night of the show from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sponsored by the Food Bank in conjunction with the Westchester County Business Journal, there is no charge to attend so make reservations early by going the following link to register:
