Assemblyman Katz Ticketed for Pot, Speeding

The representative, a Mohegan Lake resident, was pulled over on March 14 for speeding when police found a small bag of marijuana, according to a police statement.

Assemblyman Steve Katz (R–Mohegan Lake) was ticketed on Thursday morning for being in possession of marijuana and speeding, state police said.

Katz, 59, who was first elected to office in 2010, was stopped for speeding on New York State Thruway in the town of Coeymans on March 14 at about 10 a.m., state police said in a statement.

While driving northbound on I-87, Katz was traveling at 80 mph in a posted 65-mph speed zone, police said. After noting the odor of marijuana, a trooper found Katz in possession of a small bag of marijuana.

Katz, a veterinarian who lives in Yorktown with his wife Nicole and their four daughters, was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana and speeding.

He was released and scheduled to appear in the town of Coeymans Court on March 28.

Katz issued a statement Friday afternoon:

"In light of the unfortunate incident that occurred, I am compelled to address it briefly.

First, I will not let this incident impede my public service and my calls for real mandate relief, a better economic climate and better services for those in need in New York.

This should not overshadow the work I have done over the years for the public and my constituency.

I am confident that once the facts are presented that this will quickly be put to rest."

He was re-elected to another two-year term in the Assembly in 2012. The 94th Assembly District includes Yorktown, Somers, Patterson, Southeast, Carmel and Putnam Valley.Katz earned his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in 1984. He also holds a Bachelor's Degree in Biology and Animal Science from Cornell University.

Editor's Note: The information was provided by New York State Police. It does not indicate a conviction.

Another doped up pol. Which explains why this country is going to hell.

Wrong it's going to pot

Assemblyman Steve Katz has railed against illegal drugs and voted against the legalization of medical marijuana last year. Definition of a hypocrite anyone?
Mary Hoehmann March 18, 2013 at 02:53 pm
Pot shouldn't be illegal and politicians shouldn't be two faced but neither of those things are going to change any time soon!

This is a big dissapointment to me. Rebublicans are the beacon of freedom, personal responsibility and morality. Mr. Katz violated a trust. We need good republicans to counter the sludge/sleaze of the modern democratic party...Barney's Frank, Anthony Weiner, Rev Jacksons son, Sen Menedez and, of course, Bill Clinton are but a few examples.
JJ March 18, 2013 at 03:21 pm
Wrong is wrong no matter what political party it is.
This is not something you can just walk away. Citizens and Taxpayer's expect better behavior from elected officials who set the rules & regulations for the rest of us to follow. I hope to see additional follow up on this news article.
Issy March 18, 2013 at 05:33 pm
Have you not learnt, there is no responsibility or morality in politics. And freedom is for all people not just those like yourself.
Sheila Schraier March 18, 2013 at 08:32 pm
Still laughing from "Republicans are the beacon of freedom, personal responsibility & morality". Guess that beacon has blinded their vision to their own gross hypocrisy. Chaney & Portman against gays until one of their family comes out? Reps. have no empathy for others until it hits them at home.
smellypants March 18, 2013 at 09:56 pm
Laugh all you want. Truth is that the democratic party is the beacon of sludge, sleaze and dishonesty. Rebublicans are generally the beacons of truth and decency. I am disappointed in Mr. Katz but believe he is an anomaly.
Sheila Schraier March 18, 2013 at 11:48 pm
Plenty of sludge to go around in both parties. But Republicans are worse bc what they say (family values, Rush, Newt?) & what they do are 2 different things. They are hypocrites, as Dr. Katz so clearly proves. Vote against medical mj & then get caught using it yourself, at 10AM. Beacons of truth & decency? (Cut aid to the poor, tax breaks for the rich & corps.) I want to live on your planet. It sounds a lot nicer than Earth. Be nice if you didn't hide behind an alias too.
The Last Patriot March 19, 2013 at 12:24 am
Both parties are terrible, I agree with that part.
But so what if some of us use an alias? I value privacy; I know that's odd in this world of fakebook, twitter, etc. Plus, I could just as easily make up a first and last name, as I believe some posters here do.

"I am confident that once the facts are presented that this will quickly be put to rest."
How does he plan to put his blatant hypocrisy "to rest"?
Sheila Schraier March 19, 2013 at 02:51 am
Should be interesting to watch him try to worm out of it.
smellypants March 19, 2013 at 12:52 pm
Speaking of worming out of it.... what was worse, what Katz did or what Anthony's Weiner or Barney's Frank or Bill Clinton did?
Sheila Schraier March 19, 2013 at 01:08 pm
Listing all of politicians peccadillos doesn't get us anywhere. How about all those outwardly anti-gay republicans caught in the act? We could go on & on. None of this is OK, esp. when it is a politician. I also believe if you have the courage of your convictions you put your real name out there too. Easy to throw stones behind an alias. Patch should change its policy. If you want privacy don't post.

I'm with Schraier. Let's hear from Katz about his arrest and the marijuana found in the car. As far as I'm concerned, his statement is just a prelude to "let this blow over."
Billy March 19, 2013 at 04:32 pm
& that's what will happen. The charge is a violation so at best he'll get $100 fine.
Funny that the marijuana charge would be anonymous in NYC & probably get dismissed entirely & that's without a lawyer. I wonder why he voted against medical marijuana though, maybe the proposed law was too restrictive, like the medical marijuana laws of NJ & CT not like CA?
stephany March 19, 2013 at 05:26 pm
except for the fact that the ST smelled weed---and NOT through the bag. either from his person or coming from the car. I am more interested in what the ST has to say about why he did not even test the guy, yet somehow knew he was not the least bit high. This could be used in other court cases as in selective prosecution. Does anyone really believe if this was a black guy from Newburg the same thing would have happened
Sheila Schraier March 19, 2013 at 05:52 pm
Stephany you are s right. The bottom line is this-if he weren't caught speeding way over the limit (at 10AM) none of the rest would have come to light. A guy who voted against medical marijuana was in possession & the car reeked. As an elected official who drafts & votes on laws Katz obviously believes they do not apply to him-speed limits, marijuana use. (I am personally in favor of legalization of all mj use, though I have never used it myself. We spend a fortune on enforcement, courts & incarceration. It could be a money maker with regulation & taxes.) But right now-illegal. His is my rep. in Albany, & I am totally embarrassed by him. Perhaps the next election cycle if he chooses to run, which he prob. will; guys like him have no shame, the notoriously short-memory electorate will vote him out. (Not hopeful about that. Look at Charlie Rangel-in his 80's, ethics violations & still reelected by an overwhelming %).

Since you're such an expert, what opportunity did the state police have to get a blood test?
Unless there is a court order, which would only come after a death or serious physical injury, the state police can not compel you to give blood. But then, you're the expert on everything cause you watch CSI.
stephany March 19, 2013 at 06:06 pm
ITDFK-please do not comment on me any more.I never comment on you, please do the same for me,get your jollies somewhere else
DONE...
stephany March 19, 2013 at 06:13 pm
thanks, it is sort of like this- you are speeding, not weaving in and out of the lane, you get pulled over for the speeding, your breath smells of alcohol and you have a bottle of opened liquor in the back seat. pay $100 and go home...not working for me !!
smellypants March 20, 2013 at 12:01 am
I think that the democrats probably planted the weed to embarrass him.
Sheila Schraier March 20, 2013 at 04:08 am
Wow, Smellypants. Way to evade personal responsibility. You wish. He was speeding & was using. Case closed. Let him accept the punishment for his acts like any citizen should. No special treatment.
Elizabeth R Baecher March 21, 2013 at 07:20 pm
Just one more case in point to eliminate an unenforceable law which burdens the taxpayer with a fortune in court and jail costs. If Assemblyman Katz is to be punished for anything, it's hypocrisy.

First, I will not let this incident impede my public service and my calls for real mandate relief, a better economic climate and better services for those in need in New York......................This is great ! "HE WILL NOT LET ?????" Its out of HIS HANDS now. When you do something and get caught - its out of your hands - you cannot control what people think. Most everybody has done some dumb stuff in the past but when you grow-up you leave it behind. Or you should. Also, who knows how many mis-diagnosed animals are out there ? If you high your judgement is impared and he may have recommeded animals be euthanized when not necessary ? That really sucks !!!
john nardi March 24, 2013 at 05:50 pm
true on all counts BUT....THE LAW IS THE LAW....if you are charged with making the law you shouldnt be breaking the law. He should have known better don't you agree ? Prudent common sense. I'm an elected official, I'm driving , I shouldn't smoke weed or be in possession of weed. I'll wait until I get to Albany and have a few tokes in the car before I go in and make some law!
john nardi March 24, 2013 at 05:52 pm
Would you bring your sick pet to him for diagnosis ?
smellypants March 24, 2013 at 05:58 pm
Let's cut this poor guy a break.... the extremely rare Republican who makes a small mistake and this is the hysterical reaction. Where were all of you critics on Charlie Wrangle, Barney's Frank, Anthony's Weiner and Bill Clinton's Blue Dress? Huh? Hypocrites.
Sheila Schraier March 24, 2013 at 08:37 pm
I love reading these comments. Just hilarious: extremely RARE Republican who makes a SMALL mistake...." Thanks for the laugh. Wrangle? Barney's Frank? (Is that a homophobic reference?) See Phil Reisman's column in today's Journal News. More laughs. NOBODY said that there isn't plenty of stuff from both parties. Some people are blind to their own party's transgressions.

I'm glad to see someone else put on paper some of the reaction I have had to being required to pay aRead More fee to park at WestMed. I think the fee is unconscionable! I was even more insulted when I received a tone-deaf response to my complaint about the fee from the head of WestMed. I understand that WestMed ended up paying considerably more for the parking facility than anticipated, but that's no justification for charging clients who have no choice but to park there in order to receive vital services. It's a gross insult to the patients. It's not our fault that WestMed had to cough up more dough. With new WestMed locations being opened every few months, clearly the company is not hurting financially. And, what's most ridiculous, is that they hired a staff of four or five parking attendants to issue tickets and instruct us how to pay for the parking! Why not use their salaries to help defray the facility's cost? You're right that it's pure greed because WestMed could have chosen to recoup the cost more slowly and not charge a fee. When I expressed my displeasure about the fee to my doctor, he posed an interesting question: when the facility's cost is paid off, will WestMed continue to charge for parking? By this time, WestMed has certainly recouped enough of the cost to make a dent in the overall expense. It's time to get rid of the fee and restore some dignity to what used to be a fine organization. In the past I heartily recommended family, friends and many others to WestMed. Now, I've got a very nasty taste in my mouth about WestMed! Shame on you, WestMed!
Clifford Blau June 15, 2013 at 09:48 am
It's not true that parking is required. You could do as I do and walk there (assuming it isRead More actually the White Plains office you are referring to and not Harrison), or take a bus, or a taxi, or have someone drop you off and pick you up. And if you aren't happy with their service, go somewhere else. There are lots of doctors not affiliated with Westmed.
Cathy G June 15, 2013 at 04:41 pm
Clifford, thanks for your two cents! How lucky for you that you can walk to your doctor's office andRead More not have to pay to park!
