Fire Kills Two at White Plains YMCA; Police Investigating Possible Homicide

White Plains Police are investigating a fire that claimed the lives of two people at the YMCA located at 250 Mamaroneck Ave.

The fire, which ignited inside a third-floor room in the building, was called in some at about 4 a.m. Saturday morning, according to new reports.  

White Plains Police Commissioner David Chong told News 12 that one body was discovered in the room after the fire was extinguished and another body was found in the building's lobby, behind the front counter. Chong also told the Journal News that the fire is being investigated as a possible homicide.

All of the other residents inside the building were evacuated and seven firefighters were transported to the hospital for minor injuries.

Mamaroneck Ave. southbound, between Maple and Carhart avenues were closed, while officials investigated the scene. The street has since been reopened, but the YMCA remains closed.
