Huddle Troubles? Police Investigate Bar

The Huddle is often listed in Sleepy Hollow police blotter entries, including two incidents last week; one neighbor claims the Van Tassel residents have had enough.

There are two recent Sleepy Hollow Police blotter entries in which Beekman's Huddle bar figures prominently:

On Oct. 12 at 12:42 a.m., a caller reported a fight in front of the bar, with a large group forming in the middle of the street. Sleepy Hollow PD asked the Tarrytown force to send an additional unit to assist in the response. By the time a Tarrytown unit arrived, police reported the crowd was dispersed and all was under control.

Later that night, at 4:17 a.m., a fight was reported at the BP gas station on North Broadway. Officers there reported an “out of control” and “intoxicated” female, according to the language of the police report, apparently attacking her sister and two friends. The woman had spit at them and had to be restrained by officers. She was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and an ambulance was requested for what responders deemed a high level of intoxication. The woman said she was drunk and had been drinking Long Island Iced Teas at the Huddle Bar; she was 20 years old and from Yorktown.

Lieutenant Anthony Bueti said they submitted a police referral on the bar to the state Alcohol Beverage Control division for this incident.

When asked about the regularity of the bar in the blotters, Bueti said the police department was, with several agencies, looking into a series of problems with the bar. He said he didn't want to specify which agenices at this time, but that the bar was indeed under investigation.

"We're trying to get a handle on it,” Bueti said.

Bueti said this was the first instance he was aware of where there was proof of underage drinking there; the typical complaints police have responded have involved fights and loud patrons spilling out onto the sidewalk and street.

“It’s right across the street from a big apartment building, which seems like a bad location for a bar,” said Bueti.

This comes on the heels of a letter Patch received from a tenant of that big apartment building, the Van Tassel building, who wished to remain anonymous to "avoid any retaliation from the Huddle and the Sleepy Hollow Police Department."

From anonymous Van Tassel resident:

Recently, the residents of the Van Tassel apartments received letters under the doors telling them to contact their local district representative to complain about the noise from The Huddle because the police department will do nothing about it. At this time, I am unsure if the letter came from the complex, but they are also advising people call their district representative.

People have moved out of the complex because of the noise. Drunken people have passed out in the courtyard, on steps, and near the building's entrances. This has been going on since The Huddle opened. The police have been called countless times. Nothing is ever done. Half the time, no police show. In the past few months, I've experienced the following:

1. If you live in the complex, you should not plan on getting any sleep Thursday-Sunday evenings. After people leave the bar, they scream, shout, and brawl literally ten feet below my window. In fact, you should plan on getting up those mornings at 4 a.m. to see what ruckus is going on.

2. If we call the police, either no one shows, or nothing is done about the noise.

3. Seen at least four fistfights after 2 a.m. outside the school playground (across the street) in the past two months.

4. Picked up countless beer cans and bottles in the Van Tassel's courtyard, the surround steps, and the school playground.

5. People passed out on my steps and on benches in the courtyard.

7. Men pee on cars, on walls, and on steps in and around the complex.

8. Things get out of control right outside the bar, and the bouncers do nothing.

9. A fist fight DURING THE DAY carry out on the streets from The Huddle. Again, nothing was reported or done.

10. People break into our complex's downstairs garbage/laundry room to smoke pot. They also do this on the school playground.

11. People who obviously can't walk straight get into cars and drive away.

There has been a lot of talk within the residents of the Van Tassel on the lack of cooperation from The Huddle and the Police. We would love for you to look into this, and to give us courage to come forward to fight this problem. We would not only like to get a good night's sleep back, but we are trying to prevent something terrible from happening.

Thank you for your time.

Do you live in the Van Tassel apartments and experience the issues this tenant addresses? Or do you frequent and support the Huddle? Should such an active bar sit across from such a populated building? Or this a necessary part of the culture of inner village living? Weigh in.

Talking of a bad economy and finnaly a good business in town. I was born and raised in Sleepy Hollow. I believe these old hags are trying to find something to complain about. Get a life. We would actually really appreciate you moving. I dont know why these people feel like they have a say in how the town is run. The racism and innapropiate comments about the neighborhood has brought me to a boil. I am disgusted in these negative comments. Grow up, and stop bitching and complaining . Also the huddle has more security than any other bar in town too bad its the only bar that is updated and people enjoy spending time at. Everytime i go to the bar the security wont let people stand in front and once you leave you cant come back in. They have it as much under control as possible. As for all you whinners just move or wait mabie you cant afford it.... oh well quess you'll be stuck in your misserable lives. Instead of brining down good people, meet them and get to know them , I have great respect for them and mabie if you hags had some class this comment wouldent get me this angry. I will persinally submit a letter to the liquer athority with a link to a video showing the bar security and their attention to not allowing under aged drinking. I hope you all loose and are more carefull when picking your battles.
