Police: Masked White Plains Man Caught with 'Burglar's Tools' in Pleasantville

Editor's Note: The following story was originally posted by Sarah Studley on the Pleasantville-Briarcliff Manor Patch on Friday, Aug. 16.

A White Plains man is scheduled to appear in Pleasantville village court Tuesday after he was charged with possession of burglar's tools, a misdemeanor, following a foot pursuit on Aug. 13.

According to a press release from the Pleasantville Police Department, "An off-duty Pleasantville Police officer noticed a man wearing a mask and carrying a satchel on Jackson Alley just after midnight and notified Headquarters. When the officer identified himself as a police officer to the individual, the subject fled the scene. He was captured after a short foot pursuit."

Police Lt. Erik Grutzner told Patch Friday that the office noticed the man in the vicinity of Jackson Alley at about 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 14.

Police are calling the man "a person of interest" in a number of burglaries, as well as attempted burglaries, that night and possible in previous days.

The 63-year-old White Plains resident was processed and remanded to Westchester County Jail.

According to jail records, there is no bail set in the case and the man is due in Village Court Tuesday.

"In addition, the Pleasantville Police Department has reason to believethat other locations may have been targeted, either in Pleasantville or surrounding communities," the press release stated.

Pleasantville police request that anyone who witnessed "suspicious activity" the night of Aug. 13 night to call 769-1500.

Because the defendant is not local to Pleasantville, Grutzner said the village's detectives are working with other departments around the county on "any unsolved cases that would fit with this defendant."

Note: Arrests do not indicate convictions.
