Authorities were not amused by what turned out to be and now a Rye teenager is in serious trouble for allegedly
Police Commissioner Connors also confirmed another call was made "in a similar manner" on Friday, June 29 to the County Fire Control Center also using a text line for the hearing impaired alleging the caller's mother was injured that turned out to be unsubstantiated. Connors did not say whether Friday's 'spoof' call was being investigated as related to the Wednesday incident. The Friday call was reportedly dispatched to a nonexistent address on North Street.
“These are far from prank calls. They divert valuable resources from other duties, often at considerable expense," said Commissioner William Connors. "The quick arrest in this case should serve notice on people engaged in this type of activity that they will be caught and held accountable for their actions.”
Last Wednesday afternoon, at 2:50 p.m., Rye Brook Police Department relayed what seemed to be a report of an ongoing home invasion at 105 North Street in Rye. When Rye City police answered the call and made entry into home, reinforced by authorities from the county and surrounding areas including Rye Brook, Harrison, Port Chester and the MTA, they discovered a startled homeowner with her son and two teens in the house. The caller, using a text telephone, claimed to be in the house hiding under a bed while intruders barricaded residence doors with couches.
On Monday evening, Rye Police Department issued a statement regarding the arrest of a 14 year old suspect:
On Friday, June 29, 2012, detectives from the City of Rye Police Department and the Westchester County Department of Public Safety arrested a fourteen year old male, who resides in the City of Rye, and charged him with Falsely Reporting an Incident in the Third Degree and Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree. Because of his age, his case has been referred to Family Court; therefore, his identity cannot be released.
According to the release, the investigation remains open "as detectives work toward identifying additional possible suspects as well as the source of other similar incidents."
