White Plains 'Y' Residents Could Start Moving Back Tuesday; Facility to Reopen Sept. 9

Crews are working at the White Plains YMCA, located at 250 Mamaroneck Ave., to clean residential areas from the damage caused by Saturday's fire. Police officials are continuing to investigate incident as a possible murder/suicide.

A temporary shelter that was set up White Plains Senior Center for YMCA residents displaced by Saturday's fire is being relocated to the YMCA’s community rooom.

Residents were being housed a the senior center, located at 65 Mitchell Pl., after fire ignited inside a room on the third floor of the YMCA, located at 250 Mamaroneck Ave. Police are investigating the incident as a possible murder/suicide after the bodies of a resident and a night watchman were discovered.

Red Cross officials said the YMCA’s residential area houses 110 people on a long and short term basis. About 60 people were on hand when the fire ignited and a little more than 40 people have been staying at the temporary shelter each night.

“I can’t give a timetable for when the residents will be able to move back, but they are going through each floor,” said Caroline Sherwin, a spokeswoman for the American Red Cross of Greater New York. The hope is that the bulk of the residents will be moved back in by tomorrow.”

Residents were allowed to go back to their rooms Monday afternoon to pick up personal items.

Although the community room is being opened up as a shelter, the YMCA’s other facilities will remain closed until Sept. 9, according to a statement made by YMCA officials on their Facebook page.

The YMCA's membership desk will be open this week for registration from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The New Rochelle and Rye YMCAs are allowing White Plains members to use their facilities until the building is reopened.
