New DMV Website Keeps in Mind Mobile Users

The state's new, redesigned Department of Motor Vehicles website (dmv.ny.gov) unveiled Friday (Feb. 28) allows New Yorkers to renew registrations and order a replacement driver's license, learner permit or non-driver ID card from a mobile device. Officials say those are two of the most popular online customer service transactions.

“The goal of our customer service initiative is to make DMV’s entire operation fast, easy and convenient," DMV Commissioner Barbara J. Fiala said." This redesign is a big step in that direction, making it as easy to conduct transactions on a smart phone or tablet as it is on a desktop or laptop computer.”

The website makes it easier, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a press release, to utilize dozens of services—such as making reservations for DMV visits, replacing a title certificate or paying an insurance lapse penalty—online.

Users will be able to sign up for mobile alerts to remind them when registration and vehicle inspection deadlines are near. The new site also allows for visitors to more easily find particular online transactions and make reservations at any state-run DMV offices.

“This new website is a one stop shop for DMV resources—updated to match the ever changing ways New Yorkers use technology to access information in the 21st century,” Cuomo said. “This redesign is another step in the state’s effort to make government more innovative, efficient and available to the people it serves.”

An update next month will include a new design for a third mobile transaction: renewing a driver's license or non-driver ID.

"DMV ultimately plans to add more features for use on mobile devices, and to use the responsive design for all online transactions," the press release states.

While DMV transactions are becoming for those using mobile devices, Cuomo noted that New Yorkers should "keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road in the continued effort to reduce the deadly consequences of distracted driving."
