Claims for government assistance in Westchester after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy have outstripped requests for aid in surrounding areas, new statistics reveal today.
The storm—which slammed the Lower Hudson Valley region in late October, and claimed four local lives—had yielded 5,545 FEMA registrations in Westchester alone.
FEMA aid helps residents who cannot recoup damage costs through insurance, but a registree can only receive funds to repair their primary residence.
The Westchester numbers—which do not account for popular density—dwarf those of some nearby counties. As of Jan. 21, Rockland had 3,183 registrations, and Putnam 347.
Orange County has had 1,097, Sullivan 491 and Ulster 247, added Nathan Custer, a FEMA public information officer.
