Residents Rally Against Proposed Detox Center

The proposed Sunrise Drug and Alcohol Detox Center will be discussed at a public hearing on Oct. 1.

Citing neighborhood safety as their primary concern, a group of residents hosted a rally earlier this week in opposition to the proposed detox center on Dekalb Ave.

The White Plains Common Council is currently considering an application from Sunrise Drug and Alcohol Detox Center to transform a nursing home into a 33-bed detox center.

Earlier this week a group gathered at 37 Dekalb Ave., the proposed site of the facility, to voice their opposition.

Protestors are concerned about possible safety issues caused by the center. According to a release from the Carhart Neighborhood Association, patients at the center would have the freedom to leave at any time and could affect the neighborhood.

Adding to the groups concern is the large concentration of school bus stops and senior citizens in the area, according to the release.
