Tuckahoe Approves More Anti-Smoking Laws

With smoking already banned in or near Village Hall in Tuckahoe, the Board unanimously voted Monday evening to ban smoking in many other designated public spaces around the Village.

Next time you light up a cigarette in Tuckahoe, you may want to make sure you are not breaking any new adopted village codes as new restrictions on smoking in public places around Tuckahoe have taken effect.

on why these smoking bans were important to the health and well-being to the village and last night, with no clear opposition for the smoking ban from either the board or residents, the Board of Trustees voted unanimously to enlarge the definition of locations where smoking is banned.

Ballfields

  • Any field owned or maintained by the Village of Tuckahoe, Town of Eastchester or County of Westchester and which is located within the Village of Tuckahoe.

Playgrounds

  • An outdoor area maintained by the Village and designated for children to play in. Private playgrounds such as those at schools or churches do not fall under these guidelines.
  • Smokers must stand at least 50 feet from playground equipment except sidewalks ajoin the playground.

Tuckahoe Police will be tasked with enforcing the new laws but Chief John Costanzo says that residents will simply be given warnings for the time being while residents get used to and become aware of the new smoking laws.

So what do you think?  Are the members of the Village Board moving in the right direction in attempting to improve the overall quality of life in the Village in regard to public smoking?

Josh, I hardly agree that adults smoking (legal-must I remind you) cigarettes in public is a priority when there are flocks of young adults roaming the streets with liquor, pot and rx drugs in their possession. They are out there! Does no one on the Village Board see this? I think the boards priorities are a bit clouded.

Hey Nanette, you do make a valid point that I honestly have no counter for. As in any municipality, issues that arise must be dealt with one at a time and sometimes in my opinion, less complex ones are dealt with a little more swiftly. The issues you speak of I have seen as well, as I imagine the Village Board is aware of too, but I imagine solutions to those problems will take more time to come up with.

So true as in anything in life, it is always easiest to tackle the small stuff and put the bigger issues on the back burner...that is until, it blows up in your face. I just feel that we make such big deal about certain things and turn a blind eye to the larger issues until it becomes a major problem.

Think you inspired me to write another article later this week on this very issue. Thanks for the input Nanette.

IT IS A SAD DAY WHEN THE GOVERNMENT HAS TO MAKE A LAW TO FORCE ADULTS TO BE COURTEOUS TO OTHERS. WHAT HAPPENED TO RESPECTING EACH OTHERS SPACE, COMMON SENSE OR SIMPLY ASKING SOMEONE IF YOU ARE OFFENDING THEM BEFORE YOU LIGHT UP. AS AN EX-SMOKER,I DO NOT CONDONE SMOKING HOWEVER ADULTS SHOULD ACT LIKE ADULTS ! COME ON, WE ALL LEARNED THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RIGHT AND WRONG IN KINDERGARTEN ! MORE LAWS ARE NOT THE ANSWER , EDUCATION IS ! BUT IN CLOSING , I THINK THEY SHOULD PASS A LAW BANNING THE PASSING OF GAS IN ELEVATORS !!! TALK ABOUT OFFENSIVE , HA HA!! ANYWAY , GROW UP AND LEARN TO LIVE TOGETHER.
