Westchester County Airport Gets $6.5M in Federal Funding

The money will be used to purchase an aircraft rescue & firefighting vehicle, de-icing equipment and fund a runway replacement project.

The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded the Westchester County Airport $6,534,000 in grants for various improvements, including a project to replace the runway.

The county was awarded four separate grants. The largest grant of $4,734,000 will be used to tear out and replace the entire runway and another one for $1,260,000 will be used to replace an outdated aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicle.

A $315,000 grant was awarded for  aircraft de-icing equipment that applies glycol to airplane surfaces and prevent inflight freezing; and a $225,000 grant was awarded for the removal of a pole near the runway to improve safety during takeoffs and landings.

“We know investing in infrastructure and safety at the Westchester County Airport means huge growth not only in the county but in the entire Tri-State Region,” said U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-NY, said in a statement. “This FAA grant for infrastructure and safety improvements like runway upgrades, new equipment and vehicles for winter months and fire emergencies and the removal of an obstructing pole near the runway will ensure Westchester County Airport remains a beacon to residents, businesses and visitors and continues to boost the area’s economy.”

Said U.S. Sen.  Kirsten E. Gillibrand, D-NY: “Investing in infrastructure is one of the fastest, most effective ways to strengthen our economy, and our safety. These federal funds will help bring new runways and new emergency response equipment to Westchester County Airport to bring better, faster, safer service for Westchester travelers, and help bring new business.”
