Each week, White Plains Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens, and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments. We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one (or one group) each week as the Patch Whiz Kid. Submit your nomination in our comment box below or e-mail the information to email@example.com
Here's our story on this week's Whiz Kids: The Students
Whiz Kids' Accomplishment: Raised awareness and $5,510.31 through "Pennies for Patients," to support the White Plains based .
Keys to Awesomeness: Children in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade busted open their piggy banks, scoured couches for coins and hit-up relatives for pocket change to raise awareness and money to fight blood cancers. Within one week—students collected a more than $5,000, and learned about blood cancers (in a child friendly manner).
Melissa Tellez's fourth grade class was the highest fundraising class donating more than $400. Church Street School's 4 to 11-year-olds are known for their compassion having raised between $3,000 to $5,000 for hurricane victims in New Orleans and Haiti.
Let's also give a a hand to Barbara Santarelli, the school's nurse, who coordinated the effort, as well as the school's teachers and administrators for motivating their students to do good!
