[PHOTOS] Post Road School Hosts Carnival Fundraiser for New Playground

Hundreds of people gathered at the Post Road School in White Plain Saturday for fun and games.

School officials are hopeful that the fun will continue for the students with the construction of a new playground in August if things go according to plan. The carnival, in its second year, is a fundraiser to help build a new  playground at the school.

Andrea Hazen, head of the school's playground committee, said her group was about $9,000 away from the $75,000 needed to build a new playground. The Carnival raised $8,000 last year.

"We started fundraising for the playground about two year ago," Hazen said. "When the new building, which is going on it's fourth year, was built, they had designs for a playground. But they never had the chance to put one in."

Students at the school have been forced to play on the blacktop or on the baseball field. There's also a smaller playground near the school's entrance, but it's small and is use by the kindergartners.

"There's really no place for them to hang out with their friends or to climb and do all that stuff," Hazen said. "After school, the kids have to go to a local neighborhood playground instead of staying at the school."

The White Plains  school district allocated the $50,000 to four of its five elementary schools for the construction of playgrounds through a public bond referendum that was approved by the public in October.

The Ridgeway Elementary School in White Plains had a ribbon cutting ceremony for its playground last week.
