Great American BBQ 'Pop Up' Open Through November

Craving some barbecue?

Fortunately, residents don’t need to look too far.

The Great American BBQ Co., located at 54 Gedney Way in White Plains, opened up a pop up restaurant earlier this month. The restaurant will stay open 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week, through Nov. 30.

“We decided to do this because we’ve been caterers for 20 years, only doing barbecue catering,” said David Pellon, director of catering for the Great American BBQ. “For years we’ve had people come in and say we’d like to just come in and get an entre for ourselves. Are you ever going to do a restaurant? We kept saying no.”

But Pellon said the ‘pop up’, or temporary, restaurant concept has caught on of late and that’s what spurred the idea for the sit down restaurant. The resturant is located inside an empty space that was once used by Sam’s of Gedney Way, located next door, for outdoor dining.

The space was renovated to make way for the restaurant.

Specialties on the menu include: potato and corn “Chowda, Two Step” Chili; Barbeque chopped “Table” Salad; Texas “All American” Braised Beef Brisket; and Great American BBQ “Taste it All” Sampler.

All BBQ will be rubbed, smoked and slow roasted on site by pit master, Pancho Diaz, who’s been honing his BBQ skills for more than 15 years. Executive Chef Joseph Sasso said he and his staff are “excited and ready to start smoking!”

If things go well, the Great American BBQ could open again as restaurant in the near future.

“If the pop-up restaurant proves to be a success, we would consider reopening the concept as a seasonal restaurant during the summer and fall of 2014,” said Peter Herrero, owner of The Great American BBQ Co. and Sam’s of Gedney Way.
