A fun-filled day of golf and activities will raise funds to aid new advanced brain cancer treatment and clinical trials in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area at the 3rd Annual Westchester Neuroscience Research FoundationGolf Outing Fundraiser on Monday, May 21, 2012 at the Leewood Golf Club in Eastchester, NY.
In the three years since WNRF was formed by John M. Abrahams, M.D., Chief of Neurosurgery at Northern Westchester Hospital, the Foundation has helped fund potential life-saving research and clinical trials to fight deadly brain tumors, including the glioblastoma multiforme tumor (GBM) that took the lives of Sen. Ted Kennedy and Mets catcher Gary Carter.
Last year, WNRF partnered with the Cancer Center at Northern Westchester Hospital and Brain & Spine Surgeons of New York to launch the Westchester Brain Tumor Program, which is conducting three clinical trials to treat GBM patients.
“We are getting closer to finding ways to slow the progression of recurrent malignant brain tumors, but much more research is needed,” says Dr. Abrahams, a resident of Scarsdale and co-chair of the event. “The Foundation’s role is to raise money and support such research and make it available for patients suffering from these conditions.”
Event co-chair Joseph G. Comizio, D.D.S., who also lives in Scarsdale, explains that last year’s event was a great success, and the money raised allowed WNRF to provide a grant to Weiliam Chen, Ph.D., who is studying the use of hydrogels to deliver anti-cancer drugs directly to glioblastoma brain tumors.
“Dr. Chen’s work already has the potential of producing promising results,” Dr. Comizio explains. “We hope that the community’s enthusiastic participation this year will help the Foundation reach its fundraising goal of $100,000.”
The annual event, which will be held at the Leewood Golf Club (One Leewood Drive, Eastchester, NY), kicks off with registration and brunch at 10:30 am, to be followed by the shotgun start at 12:15 pm.
The first golfer lucky enough to score a Hole-In-One will win a brand new 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera, courtesy of Pepe Porsche.
Additional activities throughout the day include a putting contest, cocktail reception and auction. Non-golfers are invited to join the party at the cocktail reception.
The cost for the event is $500 per golfer and $175 to attend the cocktail party alone. Sponsorships are also available.
