Flu Shots at Tuesday at Westchester Community College; Food Bank for Westchester Hosts Fundraiser Thursday; Woman's Club Benefit Set for Friday

TODAY: Today is the celebration of when Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas, which was on Oct. 12, 1492. Public schools and government buildings, including the post office, are closed.

TUESDAY: County Executive Robert P. Astorino announced today that the Westchester County Department of Health will offer free flu shots to residents ages 9 and up on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Westchester Community College in the science building ground floor student lounge on the Valhalla campus. Residents can register in advance for the flu clinic at www.health.ny.gov/Go2Clinic, but walk-ins are welcome, so if the appointments fill up, don’t worry.

TUESDAY: The White Plains Library is celebrating “Teen Read Week”  with a new Teen Book Review Club. Teens are invited to review new books before they are published and discuss ways to share your reviews with teens and publishers. Pizza and refreshments will be served. The club starts at 5 p.m. The library is located at 100 Martine Ave. in White Plains.

WEDNESDAY:  The Westchester Jewish Community Services, located at 845 N. Broadway in White Plains, is hosting its “Women-Helping-Women Free Time Management: Boot Camp for Job Seekers Workshop” Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. This workshop will examine apply time management principles to the job search in today’s world, where change is the norm. In this environment, developing strategies for getting everything done, while maintaining balance and quality of life, is more important than ever. WEDNESDAY: Grace Episcopal Church, located at 33 Church St. in White Plains, is hosting its “Noonday Getaway Concert” series Wednesday at noon. This week’s performer is pianist Juyeon Kang, who is making her debut at Grace with performances of "Joyful Dances, The Music of Beethoven, Piazzola, Debussy, and Chopin".  A Steinway artist, Kang has brought her exquisite sound and formidable technique to audiences around the world. The event is free and open to the public.

WEDNESDAY: Robert Cioffi, CEO of Progressive Computing (PCI), a computer consulting and network installation, design and maintenance firm serving clients from offices in Westchester County and Manhattan, is presenting a seminar on IT security Wednesday inside The Microsoft Store, located at 125 Westchester Ave. in White Plains, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.. The event will  include a question and answer period. Light refreshments will be served. .

THURSDAY: Food Bank for Westchester is hosting  “An Evening in Good Taste to End Childhood Hunter” dinner and fundraiser Thursday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in White Plains. Go here for more information.

FRIDAY:  The Womans Club of White Plains Foundation, located at  305 Ridgeway in White Plains, is hosting Corks and Forks 2013, an evening of fabulous food and spirits, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.. Proceeds from the event, which costs $95 per person, will benefit Gilda’s Club Westchester and The Woman’s Club of White Plains Foundation. Go here for more information.
