Wrong Way Crash in White Plains Kills 3 Bronx Residents

Bronx residents died Saturday night in a wrong-way crash in front of 1211 Mamaroneck Ave. 

The White Plains Police Department’s preliminary investigation indicates that a 1991 Toyota Camry was travelling southbound in a northbound lane, possibly to avoid a storm roadblock, when it smashed into a 1998 Lexus.

“The investigation is active and we will know more after the medical examiner's report,” said White Plains Public Safety Commissioner David Chong. “As a matter consistent with any tragedy, the department will be working closely with the medical examiner’s office. Our hearts and prayers go out to all the victims of this horrific event."

White Plains police were alerted to the accident around 11:18 p.m. Police, the White Plains Fire Department, a Con Edison supervisor, and off-duty citizens from the New Rochelle Fire and EMS departments were on scene to assist those involved in the accident.

The occupants of the Toyota Camry had to be extracted from the car, which appeared to have no airbags because of its age. The driver of the Lexus, 25-year-old Edwardo Huezo of the Bronx, was able to exit his car, which did have air bags.

Three of the four Toyota Camry occupants Herbert Royster, 65;  Aida Royster, 70; and David Guerra, 51, were pronounced dead at White Plains Hospital, while Edgar Guerra, 61, of the Bronx was transferred to Westchester Medical Center where he  is in serious but stable condition. Huezo was taken to White Plains Hospital for blunt trauma and lacerations.

"My deepest condolences go out to the families of the victims of this terrible accident,” said Mayor Tom Roach. “The members of the White Plains Police and Fire Departments, as well as other first responders, at the scene worked hard to assist the victims and get them needed medical attention. I would like to recognize and thank them for their actions. I know I speak for everyone in our community in expressing our sympathy to the victims' families and our gratitude to our first responders."
