White Plains School Board Election is Uncontested

Incumbents Charlie Norris and Sheryl Brady are running to keep their seats on the White Plains Board of Education.

White Plains School District voters will vote on the 2013-14 budget, as well as in an uncontested election for two school board members Tuesday, May 21.   Incumbents Charlie Norris, the current board vice president, and Sheryl Brady are on the ballot and looking to keep their seats on the White Plains Board of Education.

There are seven board members who are elected to three-year terms. The board meets at 7:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month, or as scheduled. Voting takes place from noon to 9 p.m. at six voting districts in the city.

Norris, 54, a personal injury lawyer, has served on the board since 2007 and has lived in the city since 1987.  Both of his children are White Plains High School graduates. He graduated from SUNY Stony Book and has a law degree from New York Law School.

Norris said he hopes serving a third term will provide stability while the district searches for a new superintendent and a reenergizing to the district implementing its Strategic Plan.

Both Norris and Brady acted as members of the core team who drafted the plan.

Norris said his goal as a board member is “to facilitate an open and honest dialogue amongst the diverse groups in our district during which we can explore fears, inaccurate perceptions, explode myths, and find common ground. I would welcome any one or group with an open mind, and good will, who would be willing to participate in this process.”

Brady was also elected to the board in 2007, has lived in White Plains for more than two decades and is seeking her third term. She is a former college math professor, currently teachers religious school, and is also employed as a client services associate. All four children have been in the White Plains School District since kindergarten. She has a bachelor’s degree from Purchase College in math and chemistry, and a master’s degree in math and a doctorate in math from Cornell University.

“I am running again because I believe that I add value, knowledge, and a unique perspective to the work of the Board,” said Brady. “My continued service on the School Board will maintain stability in this time of administrative and programmatic change. With a love for the White Plains Schools and a passion for public education, I will keep working on behalf of our children and community to strengthen our school district.”
